Pesky Fruit Flies

Ugh! Has anyone else been dealing with fruit flies lately? They seem to be everywhere and I needed to get rid of them before I hosted a baby shower last weekend. So, it was me against the fruit flies! I had recently been to a friend’s house that had a fruit fly trap on her counter. Do any of you have friends like that? She always has great ideas on how to solve problems.

Anyway, I needed a non-toxic way to get rid of my fruit flies so I got her instructions. You can add some vinegar and a piece of fruit to the bottom of a glass or jar and then make a funnel and tape it to the container. I used apple cider vinegar in mine. Wine would also work!  It was pretty easy and very effective! She also sent me this link that I checked out, as well.

Check out the pictures below. They are pretty self explanatory but I will admit it took me a few attempts to get it just right!

This first picture was my friend’s fly trap. Notice the peach at the bottom of the glass.

This was my first attempt with a wine glass. I couldn’t quite get the funnel right.

Okay, my next attempt was with an old baby bottle. This one worked a little better but they seemed to keep escaping! Sneaky little things!

This was the last trap and most successful one I made! This is a flower vase that looks like an old fashioned milk bottle. It worked great! I caught a TON of the little flies in here and found a lot of joy in the fact that they weren’t swarming around my kitchen anymore. Basically, they swarm the funnel and eventually make their way into the jar and then can’t get out.  I got rid of the trap during my party over the weekend and I set up a new one today. They seem to be all gone now so either the cool weather is helping or my trap got them all last week. I think I’m going to go with that!
